learn to negotiate

by author · reflection · Wed Jan 21 2026

today i experienced many things. i shared my lunch with a college friend ( i haven't done that in 2 years), i sent emails asking some questions to 2 of the biggest businessmen in india (i read about it in a book and decided to give it a shot), and i tried to negotiate my gym membership fees and failed (paid the old price).

let me talk about the negotiation first because its most recent and it's on my mind right now. what i learned today is that negotiation is a skill that is required in everyday life and if i don't master it, i will be taken advantage of in all areas of life. if i do master it, it will be a massive advantage over people who don't know how. i am going to read a book or two on it because that's the best way to learn such a skill.

i felt pretty bad and disrespected about my request for a discount not being met at the gym today and only continued my membership because my father goes to the same gym. now i see that the reason for it is that i was shit at negotiating. i didn't use the power i had and gave in quickly. and about being disrespected, i don't think the receptionist is gonna stop greeting me now that i've paid the money (not that i give a fuck).

so really, it was a huge learning for a relatively small price. i've now realized how important it is to learn negotiation and this failed one will propel me into the action of learning this skill. i am grateful for it.

what my father (who paid the money) will say to the next gym employee he sees is a different story though...

P.S. today too i wrote a beautiful blog about peaky blinders and what i learned from it but lost it because i clicked the preview before saving it. i will be adding a warning near the buttons so that this is less likely to happen in the future.
